ALGARVE JEEP SAFARI
JEEP SAFARI
Expedition - About 4500 Km
1st Day, Portimão – Tangier
After fulfilling all formalities concerning the vehicles and stowing the luggage, we’ll leave from Portimão by motorway towards Algeciras where we’ll take the ferry-boat and arrive at the African continent with the first surprises. Although we are just a few minutes from Europe, there are so many different things, the people, the smells, the traffic, in short, we are in Africa! In order to get used to it, we’ll sleep at the Ibis Hotel in Tangier.
2nd Day, Tangier – Fez
The days in Morocco must start early to be fully enjoyed. In spite of being on vacation, we’ll have to make the most of what this beautiful country has to offer. On this first day we’ll visit the city of Chefchaouen with its blue colours, the ruins of Volubilis, a world heritage site, and we’ll pass through Moulay Idriss and Meknés. We’ll sleep at the Ibis hotel in Fez.
3ºDia, Fez- Erg Chebbi
The day begins again soon with a visit to the Medina of Fez, a Unesco world heritage site. Not only its bustle and the narrow winding alleys will remain in everyone's memory, but also the smell while visiting the tanneries...
Then we’ll travel heading South towards the Erg Chebbi dunes. To get there we’ll cross the Atlas mountain range, Ifrane, the Moroccan Switzerland, Azrou, the Atlas Cedar Forest, home to the endangered Barbary apes, the beautiful gorges of the Ziz and at last the magnificent dunes of the Erg Chebbi, the largest dune system in Morocco. We’ll sleep at the beautiful Yasmina hotel that has one of the best views to the dunes, as it is settled on the top of a hill.
4º Dia, Erg Chebbi – Erg Chebbi
This day should start very early for those who want to enjoy an unforgettable desert sunrise on the top of the dunes. You can do it on a camel’s back or on foot. The rest of the day will be spent driving in sand, whether climbing the dunes, skirting around the Erg or visiting the small village of Merzouga. A lot of driving, adrenalin, bogging, fears, in short, it’ll happen a little bit of everything, but this day will be a long lasting memory as one of the most spectacular!
5º Dia, Erg Chebbi – Zagora
On this day we leave at dawn, since we’ll have a great crossing ahead fully held on desert trails. It’ll be a remarkable drive, the landscape is stunning and as far as the eye can see... The ground, sometimes hard and stony, sometimes sandy, was used several times in the Dakar Rally. In the middle of nowhere people may arise when it’s least expected. Zagora is known as the capital of the desert, with its immense palm groves where all the expeditions must stop.
We’ll sleep at the Kasbah Hotel or similar.
6º dia, Zagora - Chegaga
After visiting the nice town of Zagora and taking the typical photo of the camel ride, we’ll cross very sandy tracks towards Chegaga Dunes, where we’ll sleep at a local Bivaouc. It’ll be a day with few miles traveled but a very interesting and nice one because we’ll drive through a lot of sandy trails.
As we may arrive early at the camping, we’ll be able to enjoy the magnificent dunes on foot or by jeep, always with lots of fun! This night will be totally different from the previous, since, though less comfortable, the stars will keep us company!
7º Dia, Chegaga - Tata
The route departure from camping will be fun, with many sand trails requiring some concentration, however no doubt sand driving is always thrilling. After a while we’ll arrive at Lake Iriki, place of the Dakar Rally mythical images, making all participants feel like true pilots.
The day ends at Tata hotel.
8º Dia, Tata - Bou-Jerif
This route will be entirely held on asphalt, surrounded by Moroccan beautiful landscapes; the great plains are there with such colours only witnessed in the desert.
We’ll sleep at the tourist complex of Fort Bou Jerif, close to the ancient Fort with the same name and near the famous White Beach.
9º Dia, Bou-Jerif – Agadir
This day will be a long lasting memory for those who will have the possibility to enjoy this travel. In previous expeditions we’ve heard several comments: Thank you for bringing us here, these 40 km of beach made it worth it to come to Morocco!
It’s an amazing feeling to be able to move so close to the water, with the seagulls at the distance and the beach as far as the eye can see...
After visiting the White Beach we’ll drive to Agadir to sleep at the Ibis Hotel.
10º Dia, Agadir – Marrakech
After a short visit in Agadir, we´ll drive by motorway to Marrakech so that we’ll have enough time to explore this mythical city. After visiting the Medina and having dinner at Jemaa El Fna Square, we’ll sleep at Oudaya Hotel.
11º Dia, Marrakech – Tânger
Our last day in Morocco will be spent visiting the cities of Casablanca, Rabat and Asilah. The day will end in Tangier where we’ll sleep at the Ibis Hotel.
12º Dia, Tanger – Portimão
After fulfilling all port formalities in Morocco, we’ll take the Ferry to return to the European continent. The general feeling will sure be nostalgic, missing already all the experiences you’ve lived, sceneries and landscapes you’ve seen and new friendships you’ve made!
We’ll arrive at Portimão mid-afternoon on Saturday, the 19th. Those who don’t live in the Algarve can still return home on this day.
The problem of a trip to Morocco is the wish to go back there as soon as possible. This is exactly what happened to everyone who joined us on this expedition!
